Iga Fuzan School

The Iga Fuzan School (IFS) is a traditional strategy school established in 1670, the early Edo period. Master Iga Fuzan, the Founder, was born to a family of samurai whose ancestor was from Iga and a relative of Hattori Hanzo (known as the ninja master). The Founder’s master name “Fuzan” was named after “as fast as the wind and as immovable as the mountain” in the Maneuvering Chapter of Sun Tzu’s Art of War which was also respected in Koshu school (a Japanese traditional strategy school). Iga Fuzan mastered both Japanese and Chinese traditional strategies, added his own ingenuities, and founded the IFS.

Master Iga Fuzan moved up to Edo (current Tokyo), taught traditional strategy in his private school, and came to be called one of the Great Four Strategists. He was invited by feudal lords, and served consecutively as strategists of Ise Anotsu Domain (current Mie), Mino Kanou Domain (current Gifu), Yamashiro Yodo Domain (current Kyoto), Shima Toba Domain (current Mie). After his death, the teachings of the IFS was succeeded to the Fuzan’s top discle Master Hyoudou Fuen, and later succeeded to the Fuen’s top disciple Master Wakizaka Heidon who was also a strategist of Iyo Matsuyama Domain.

After that, the IFS became prosperous and succeeded eternally by Master Wakizaka Heidon’s ancestors and disciples. Today, the IFS acts to pass down the traditional strategy to future generations as comprehensive culture and science which conveys Japanese tradition.
